This chapter presents the research data, results and a discussion of same in line with the specific objectives of the study as guided by the techniques mentioned in chapter three. It starts with a discussion of the descriptive statistics, and then diagnostic tests performed to validate the use of the techniques as appropriate and inferential statistics coupled with their interpretations.
4.2 Descriptive Statistics
The descriptive statistics of the variables of the study are reported in Table 2.As shown in Table 2, for all the 14 listed deposit money banks taken as sample, the average NPM over the period of study was 6.2% with a minimum value of 4%, maximum value of 10% and a standard deviation of about 2%. This shows that though on average, firms had a positive net profit margin, the majority of firms NPM are to the right of the normal distribution. Also, the mean value of ROTA was 2.2% with a standard deviation of 0.75% and a minimum and maximum of 1% and 3% respectively. The mean value of ROE was 2.9% with a standard deviation of 0.83% and a minimum and maximum of 2% and 4% respectively. These results show that the firms were generally profitable in rewarding the investments in assets. The fluctuation of returns in NPM and ROE were however higher than ROTA as shown by standard deviations.
Similarly, the average CSR over the period of study was 1.172 with a minimum value of 0.7, maximum value of 1.68 and a standard deviation of about 0.307. Firm size has mean value of 13.36 with a minimum value of 8.76 and maximum value of 21.08 and a standard deviation of 4.092. Leverage (gearing) has a mean value of 20.3% with a standard deviation of 6.33% and minimum and maximum values of 13% and 35% respectively. Finally, interest rate which was used to proxy for the general economic condition in the country has a mean value of 15.6%, standard deviation of 2.34% and minimum and maximum values of 12% and 18% respectively.
