3.2 Description of the Groundnut Pedal Operated Machine
The groundnut seed decorticator plate 3.3 consists of the following component parts: the hopper, threshing unit, mainframe, operator seat, bicycle pedal, chain drive, bearing, fan and shaft. The main frame is the main unit of the machine on which all other parts of the machine rest on. It is fabricated with material of high strength in other to withstand the vibration of the machine during operation. It is made up of mild steel pipe with dimension of 50mm by 25mm. Its dimension is 1500mm x 1000mm x 500mm. The feeding hopper was made of 1.5mm mild steel sheet. It was formed to the shape of a cuboid with dimensions 280mm x 270mm x 40mm. It was welded to the decorticating drum at an angle of 400 to ensure easy flow of the seed to the decorticating unit. The decorticating drum was made of 1.5mm mild steel sheet of 300mm diameter. Aluminum spike tooth was attached to the drum which does the threshing action with the aid of bolt and nut in an adjustable manner to allow variable clearance setting between the drum and the screen. The screen was made to form the base of the concave drum. The aperture size was based on the geometric mean diameter of the groundnut kernel. The bicycle pedal and chain drive mechanism gives rotary power to the decorticator when operated. The operator seat carries the operator which is also adjustable based in other to be operated by any operator.
