Causes Of Poor Academic Performance Of Secondary School Students In Agriculture

This study was carried out to assess the causes of poor academic performance of secondary school students in Agriculture using some selected secondary school in Oredo LGA,Edo State as a case study. The study was specifically set to assess the connection between students' academic success in Agricultural Science and their attitudes toward the subject, assess the students’ attitudes to the study of Agricultural Science in Edo state, and assess the areas problem can be addressed in order to improve agricultural science teaching and learning. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of teachers and students of selected secondary schools in Oredo LGA,Edo State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection.
The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores.While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that there is a connection between students' academic success in Agricultural Science and their attitudes toward the subject. The result of the findings reveals that the areas that could be the problems to be addressed in order to improve agricultural science teaching and learning includes: students attitude towards the learning of agricultural science, teachers teaching methods, and students' lack of interest towards learning agricultural science.Therefore, it is recommended that school administrators should ensure availability of the instructional materials and facilities for the execution of different teaching methods that are aligned with the teaching methods and students’ learning in classrooms. Effective teaching and learning cannot be achieved in the absence of those instructional materials. To mention but a few.
