From table 4A (1), in year 2000 volume of shares traded are recorded as 5 Billion in equities. Thus equities, have maintained an increasing trend in the period under study. Having a volume of 5 billion in 2000 and 102.85 billion in 2009. In year 2007 volume of equities traded increased geometrically to 138.10 billion and 193.14 billion in 2008. The above table can further be analyzed using bar chart as follows:
From the table above, in the year 2000 value of equity stock traded in the equities market segment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange was N28.2 billion. It increased to 57.6 in year 2001 an incremental percentage rate of 104.26% above the base value of N28.2 billion in year 2000. The other years (that is, 2002; 2003; 2004; 2005; 2006; 2007; 2008; 2009) shows an upward increase in the value of equities traded. However, year 2007 has the highest percentage increase of 402.55 percent relative to the other years. This can be attributed to the recapitalization policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria in increasing the capital base of banks from N2 (two) billion to N25 Billion, as well as, foreign direct investment in the Nigeria Stock Exchange by foreign portfolio investment managers. 73 Other factors attributable to this are the deregulation policy of the federal and state Governments at this period.
Table 4.1 A (ii) will further be analyzed using a Bar Chart to indicate the growth trend.
