CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHOD
This chapter is concerned with the description of the procedures used in gathering relevant data for the study. Specifically, it focuses on the following sub-headings:
Research Design
Sample and Sampling Techniques
Research Instrument
Validation of the Instruments
Procedure for Data Collection
Method of Data Analysis
Research Design
The research type used for this study is descriptive design. This method allowed the researcher to make careful record of what was observed in order to analyze the information from a representative sample of the population. Thus, this design was considered appropriate because of its focus on the study which intended to investigate the attitudes of teachers and students on fieldtrip in senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis in biology.
Sample and sampling Techniques
The population for the study consisted of all senior secondary school teachers and students in Ilorin metropolis. However, for the purpose of this study, simple random sampling technique was used to select three schools from each of the five Local Government Areas that constituted Ilorin metropolis. 75 Biology students and 25 biology teachers were also randomly selected from the sampled senior secondary school in Ilorin metropolis. This made a total of 100 participants for the study.
Research Instrument
The research study made use of researcher designed questionnaires to gather relevant information from the participant. The questionnaire titled “Attitude of teachers and students questionnaire on biology fieldtrip†was used to elicit information from the teachers and students of the sampled schools. The questionnaire was divided into sections A and B. Section A sought information on personal data of the participant, while section B sought respondents opinion on the attitude of teachers and students on fieldtrip in biology. The questionnaire was structured along 4-points like scale of strong agree (SA), agree (A), disagree (D) and strongly disagree (SD) respectively.
Validity of the Instrument
Validity connotes the extent to which an instrument measures what is purported to measure. The project supervisor and three (3) lectures in the department and experts in the field of measurement and evaluation validated the questionnaire in determining the content and face validity of the instrument.
Meanwhile, the reliability of the instrument is the extent to which a particular test instrument yielded consistent result when used at different occasions. Test retest method of reliability was adopted.
Procedure for Data Analysis
The researcher administered 100 copies of the questionnaire personally in all the selected 15 senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. This made it possible for the researcher to explain some of the items to the participants for clarification purpose.
Data Analysis Techniques
The data gathered for the study were statistically analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation statistic to test the hypotheses formulated at 0.05 level of significance.
