3.2.4 CASTING
Casting was done by placing the already mixed concrete in the mould made for the casting. All ingredients were hand mixed properly using the shovel and hand trowel. The concrete mixes and the specimens were prepared in accordance with the provisions of BS 1881 – 125 standard. Mould of 150mmx 150mm x 150mm size (steel moulds) were used, cleaned and smeared with oil before filling with concrete. The fresh concrete workability was investigated immediately after the final mixing of the concrete using slump cone. The cubes were then casted used to level the surface of the cubes. as shown in the plate 3.5
3.2.5 COMPACTION
Compaction is the process of expelling the entrapped air. If air is not expelled, it will result into honey combing and reduced strength. The hand method of compaction was used to avoid voids and ensure proper compaction with a steel rod by tamping. 35 blows were used during the compaction of the concrete after which the surface of the concrete was leveled smothered with the hand trowel and appropriate labels (date and sample label) were written on each cube for identification.

ABSRACT - [ Total Page(s): 1 ]ABSTRACTConcrete is a major construction material, which is usually made by mixing cement, water, fine and coarse aggregate and sometimes admixtures in their right proportions. The use of waste materials with pozzolanic properties in concrete production is a becoming a worldwide practice. The assessment of the pozzolanic activity of cement replacement materials is becoming increasingly important because of the need for more sustainable cementing products.
