The study titled "Epidemiology and associated risk factors of birth defect among newborns babies from 2017 to 2022: A case study of Sobi Specialist Hospital, Alagbado Okelele, Ilorin, Kwara State" aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of birth defects among newborns and suggest preventive measures and interventions to reduce the occurrence of birth defects at Sobi Specialist Hospital in Kwara State, Nigeria. The survey approach was employed as the most suitable method in situations where the independent variable cannot be manipulated or controlled by the researcher. The study used an empirical design, and the data were collected from a sample size of respondents. The frequency tables and simple percentages were utilized in presenting the data, and the researchers employed the SPSS statistical tools for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that birth defects were perceived to be prevalent among newborns at Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State from 2017 to 2022. A majority of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that birth defects are very or extremely prevalent.
There was also a widespread belief among respondents that there are associated risk factors with birth defects among newborns. However, respondents were somewhat divided on the existence of preventive measures and interventions to reduce the occurrence of birth defects among newborns. While some respondents agreed that there are several preventive measures and interventions, a significant proportion of respondents did not think that there are any preventive measures or interventions. Based on the findings, the study recommends increasing public awareness about birth defects and their associated risk factors.
This can be achieved through community outreach programs, seminars, and other educational initiatives to improve public knowledge and understanding of the issue. Additionally, the study recommends the need for regular health check-ups for pregnant women, especially those with a history of birth defects. This will enable early detection and prompt management of any abnormalities in the fetus. The study also suggests the provision of adequate and accessible healthcare facilities to ensure that pregnant women and newborns receive appropriate medical attention.
