METHODOLOGY
3.1 STUDY LOCATION
Ilorin, the state capital of Kwara State is located on latitude 8º3’and longitude 4º35’E of the equator with a human population of 777,667 as at 2006 census. It has a projected population of 825,027 at an annual growth rate of 3.0%. [17]. Ilorin city occupies an area of 468sqkm and it is situated in the transitional zone within the forest and the guinea savannah regions of Nigeria. It is 300 kilometers away from Lagos and 500 kilometers away from Abuja the federal capital of Nigeria.
The climate of Ilorin is tropical under the influence of the two trade winds prevailing over the country. Ilorin metropolis experiences two climatic seasons i.e. rainy and dry season. The rainy season is between March and November and the annual rainfall varies from 1000 mm to 1500 mm, with the peak between September and early October. Also, the mean monthly temperature is generally high throughout the year. The daily average temperatures are in January with 25 ºC, May 27.5 ºC and September 22.5 ºC. The tribes include; Yoruba, Nupe and Hausa/Fulani their major occupations are farming, cloth weaving and trading.
3.2 ADVOCACY AND COMMUNITY MOILIZATION
An introductory letter will be obtained from the Department of Community Health Science which will be delivered to the community leaders within Ilorin metropolis during an advocacy visit to solicit for his support and co-operation.
Similar visit will be paid to some clinics and hospitals to acquaint them on the objectives of the study.
3.3 STUDY POPULATION
The study population will comprise some households, caregivers, healthcare providers, school teachers, etc. and this makes my sampling frame from which the total number of the respondents will be sampled.
3.4 STUDY DESIGN
This is a descriptive cross sectional study that will employ quantitative method of data collection. It involves quantitative survey through the administration of interviewer structured questionnaire to assess the level of Knowledge, practices of cholera prevention and control among people living in Ilorin metropolis.
3.5. INCLUSION CRITERIA
To be included in the study are all households, care givers, school teachers etc. consented to participate in the study.
3.6 EXLUSION CRITERIA
The study will exclude all those that are less than 18 years of age as well as those who did not consent will also be excluded from this study.
3.7 SAMPLE SIZE DETERMINATION
The minimum sample size will be determined using the formula for descriptive study. The formula is given as:
n = Z²pq/d²
Where,
n = minimum sample size when population is greater than 10000
Z = standard normal deviation set as 1.96 which correspond to 95% confidence interval
p = percentage of pregnant women with good knowledge of SP utilization 15.2%, [32]
q = 1-p,
d = degree of accuracy required usually set as 5% or 0.05
By substituting,
n = 1.96 × 1.96 × 0.152 × 0.848
0.05 × 0.05
n = 198.1
Thus, the minimum sample size is 198.
Since my target population is less than 10000 then,
nf= n
1+n/N
Where nf= desired sample size when population is less than 10000
n= desired sample size when population is greater than 10000
N= total population size (which is given to be 120)
By substituting,
nf= 198
1+198/120
nf= 74.7
nf ≈ 75
