2.1 Types of family planning
There are three major types of family planning methods. They include, traditional, modern, natural. According to World Health Organization, WHO (2005)
1. TRADIONAL
- Abstinence- soporation of wife from husband.
- Coitus intercepts- with method.
- Charms such as ring, waist beads.
- Prayers.
- Native medicine.
- Vaginal douche- washing away the sperms immediately after sexual intercourse.
2. MODERN.
- Condom
- Intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD).
- Injectable.
- Oral pills.
Condom
This is a very this cover mode up of rubber (sheath). It is place on the man erect penis to catch sperm and prevent it from entering into the woman's uterus.
Advantages
- It is simple to use but, effective method.
- It prevents infections of veneral disease such as gonorrhea, syphils HIV/AIDs e.c.t.
- It prevents pregnancy when use correctly.
- Help to prevent ectopic pregnancy.
- It can be stopped at any time.
- It can be used without consulting a health care provider.
Disadvantages
- Accidental pregnancy may occur if the condom burst.
- It interferes with sexual act these by reducing feeling (sensation) for the partners.
- Many people connect condom with immoral sex.
- Many embarrass some people to buy from shop.
Intra-Uterine Conceptive Device (IUCD)
This stands for intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) work chiefly by preventing sperm and eggs from meeting. Speriaps the (IUCD) makes it hard for sperm, to make through the women's reproductive tract ant reduces the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg, passively could prevent egg implanting in the uterus.
Advantages
- Effective in preventing pregnancy.
- It usually remain in place.
- It can be used for many years, hence it is not expensive.
- A woman using this method does not have to take dally medication.
- It increase sexual enjoyment because no need to worry about pregnancy.
Disadvantages
- Menstrual changes (common in the first 3 months but likely to ussenalter).
- Longer and heavier menstrual period.
- More cramps or pain during period.
- Pain and bleeding may occur immediately after insertion.
- May come that of the uterus if not properly fixed.
- Not a good method for women with recent STDs or with multiple sex partner.
Side Effect
- Vaginal discharge.
- Weight loss.
- Immigration of the tuber/perforation.
- Urinary tract infection.
Injectable
It is give every 3 months. It contains hormones called progesterone. The hormone is released slowly into the blood stream. There is another injectable contraceptive called noristerate is give every 2 months the 3 months injectable contraceptive is called depo provera.
Advantages
- Very effective
- Privates, no one else can tell that a woman is using it.
- No daily medication.
- Long term pregnancy method but reversible.
- Dose not interfere with sexual act.
Disadvantages
- Light spotting or bleeding.
- May case weight gam.
- Amenrrhoea (especially after 1 year of use.
- It reguires another injection every 2 or 3 mother.
Oral Pills
There are pills in form of tablets taken on daily basis for a compute one month depending on number of days decided by a woman.
It contain hormone called progestin only which is the best oral contraceptive for breast feeding woman. Women who are not breasts feeding also can use progestin oral contraceptive.
Advantage
- Can be used by nursing mothers starting 6 weeks after child birth.
- It taken correctly as prescribed it is highly effectives.
- The oral pills may present menstrual irregularity.
Disadvantages
- Spotting or bleeding period.
- Lass common aids effects include headache, breast tenderness et c.
Function
- It also stop adulation (release of eggs from ovary)
- It thickens cervical mucus making of difficult for sperm to pass through.
Side Effect
- Weight gain or weight lass.
- Nausea/Vomiting.
3. Natural
- Lactation amenrrhoea - continuous breast feeding.
- Body Boat Temperature.
