2.5 Benefits of family planning.
People by goods or decide to have service because of the immediate or latent benefit they will obtain, family planning is not an exemption. However most of the family planning benefits are long and medium term, taking many years to realist. Nevertheless, these are immediate benefits that can be mentioned. The benefits of family planning spread and cover more than the individual and couple.
Who benefits from family planning:
- The children
- The mother
- The father
- The community members
Types of benefits vary but can be classified as follows.
- General health
- Socio-economic and
- Spiritual benefits.
- General Benefits of Family Planning. All individual children benefits from family planning because they receive adequate level of food, care, clothing, education, attention and time need for growth and development couples can be more socially and economically productive by regulating child bearing through proper timing. Spacing limiting the number of pregnancies and birth.
Each community can adjust more readily to community needs for health services, education, food supplies, employment, transportation, water supply and electricity if there is predictable and regulating child bearing.
- Health Benefits: Among the many health benefits that can be derived are:
- Safe motherhood: Including reduced death rate among mother arising from too early. Too closely spaced, too many, too late and risky child bearing practices.
- Child survival: Including reduction in prenatal, infant and childhood death. Children survival increases if they are not too closely spaced too many or born to mother that are too young too old or sick.
- Prevention of hereditary disease: Family planning can prevent hereditary diseases health genetic counseling and through actual avoidance of undesirable pregnancies in order women or couple with know defects. Blindness, sickle cell anemia, mongolism can be prevented.
- Prevention of communicable diseases: This can be done through adequate spacing of births to avoid overcrowding.
- Improvement of mental health and family adjustment: Child abuse, child delinquency and family stress tend to be more common in large families especially with each additional family member.
- Socio-Economic Benefits only a few of the socio-economic will be mentioned.
Reduction in undesirable pregnancies: Family planning reduces the number of undesirable pregnancies and illegitimate birth. For a couple, undesirable pregnancies are those occurring too early when couple are not prepared for it, or when there is on adequate birth spacing or when they have already had the desired number of children or when the mother is sick or when pregnancy interfere with work or productive life, family planning can prevent a wife form becoming impregnated by someone else other than the husband.
