STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can contribute to universal access to education, equity in education, the delivery of quality learning and teaching, teachers’ professional development and more efficient education management, governance and administration. Organization like UNESCO takes a holistic and comprehensive approach to promoting ICT in education; access and quality are among the main challenges they are addressing.
The use of ICT elements in teaching computer education in our secondary school has become paramount considering the need for efficient graduate professionals in our different work sectors, it is therefore important to have ICT compliant teachers in our schools who would get our students acquainted in learning with ICT element as well as in using ICT element for both academic and other professional purposes. Unfortunately this has not been actualized seeing the poor performance of our undergraduates in ICT related courses and naïve contribution of our workforce in ICT related services. These shortfalls can only be traced to numerous factors as found in our schools; these some of these factors include -: lack of technical know-how, Paucity of ICT elements, Lack of comprehensive ICT Policy, Unsteady Power Supply and Poor Funding. As relate to ICT application Jenson (2002) and Magara in Ash Craft and watt (2005.8) argue that “In Africa one in hundred people have access to personal computers. The few internet service providers are comparatively extensive, Power supply may be unreliable (or even none existing) and communications are sparse with 90% of the population living in the rural areas having only 50% of the telephone lines.
Need arises to examine these challenges as evident in Awka metropolis and seek ways to mitigate them hence this proposed research.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This research work aim at finding out the challenges facing the use of ICT elements for teaching in senior secondary school. It will also determine the extent to which ICT elements are available for teaching computer science education as well as the competence of teachers and students in using ICT elements. Specifically, the study will seek the following:-
- Examine the problems facing the use of ICT elements for teaching in senior secondary school.
- Determine the extent to which ICT elements are available for teaching in senior secondary schools.
- Find out if teachers and students are exposed to ICT competence.
