CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Tourism is quickly getting to be a standout amongst the most operative and efficient industries on the globe. It has extraordinary positive effects in countries by making work opportunities, by creating or developing infrastructure, and an extremely rich wellspring of wage and income (IPROJECT, 2016).
Tourism enhances a country's infrastructural advancement. It makes for provision, for example, great communication and transport system, low-cost and agreeable lodging, and key infrastructure. Tourism makes an impressive effect on the change of the general components of the earth, the organization of hotels and associated businesses. It likewise gives advantages that come as procurement of important framework, procurement of power, the development of streets, and convenient water supply and sewage transfer framework (IPROJECT, 2016).
Tourism improves the soul of unity among residents of different countries, makes and enhances noteworthy relationship and joined society. The conservation and improvement of the tradition, and local handcraft makes unmistakable nearby tourism items and this thusly gives path for advancement and familiarity with the Nation's legacy (IPROJECT, 2016).
Nigeria's emerging tourism industry can be compared to the nation itself, having various and predominantly unrealized potential, a scene rich in social legacy and history. The 800 km of sandy shorelines on the coast, to the tropical beach front plain inland, the mangrove bogs of the Niger delta, toward the south eastern backwoods belt. Savanna meadows cover the focal areas and further north the geology changes to hot, semi-parched bushland. These shifted areas contain mind blowing waterfalls, mountain ranges, wetlands, National Parks and World Heritage locales. Nigeria is home to more than 250 ethnic gatherings, each with its own legacy and traditions. It is vivid, energetic and accommodating (Nigeriaembassy.jp, 2016).
1.2 AIM
To design and implement tourism database management system by using data warehouse
approach to make decision.
1.3 OBJECTIVES
â–ª To identify current challenges faced by tourism management system in Nigeria.
â–ª To analyze data warehouse concepts in implementation of tourism database management.
â–ª To select suitable methodology in implementation of tourism management system.
â–ª To design database and dimensional model for tourism management system.
â–ª To implement tourism management system using the concept of data warehouse.
â–ª To specify a data model for the system using appropriate tools.
â–ª Designing a user friendly oracle APEX interface for user interaction, update, delete, and adding of information for example location, traveler and other relevant information.
â–ª Creating an APEX application to store and manage any relevant information for the project.
â–ª Combining the designs in the aforementioned objectives to form a system.
â–ª To test the system, to make decision.
1.4 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Tourism as a vital sector of the economy, the government would like to know some statistical
analysis on how vibrant and lucrative the sector is. But arriving at this expectation is quite difficult to come up with, due to manual documentation of traveler’s information which consumes the employees working time, making them stay back at workplace late, and not having a better knowledge of most visited areas, total number of foreign tourists and many other issues. Therefore, the proposed system will offer tourist and government agency the opportunity to know number of arrivals by month, year and total number of people in various locations, this will also help managers having easy and fast access to information to accelerate their daily activities, and to make appropriate decisions.
1.5 SCOPE
The scope of the project is entirely and specifically restricted to the projects objectives and reason for undertaking it which is to mitigate the existing complains on internal administrative challenges of the existing system. The coverage will be as follows:
â–ª The admin will be able to edit, delete, view, update, and add traveler, staff,
accommodation, and transportation with location information.
â–ª A staff with edit privilege will be able to view and make editing where necessary.
â–ª A traveler who has no access to the system can register to view several reports.
â–ª A user of the system can only have access to the system when he/she is a valid user.
â–ª A database and apex application will be created to manage staff details, location, traveler, accommodation, transport information and more other reports.
â–ª Data warehouse report such as: Total number of tourists that visited a particular location, total revenue derived from transportation, accommodation and travelers for a month, year, will be ascertain. More so, most visited location will be considered.
This project will not cover traveler updating their information, make booking, and payment.
