Effect Of The National Programme On Food Security On Food Production
[A CASE STUDY OF ANAMBRA STATE] -

Figure 4.1 is used to illustrate clearly the effect of the NPFS on food production. It shows the output for various products of the farmers before and during NPFS. It is clearly seen that all the products recorded an increase in their output during the NPFS. Some products recorded more increase. Piggery has the most significant increase with 4 units during the NPFS as against 1 unit produced before the NPFS. 5 units of cassava/maize were produced during the NPFS as against 3.3 units before the NPFS. 2.5 units of rice were produced during NPFS while 3.2 units were produced before the NPFS. 4.8 tonnes of yam mini set was produced during NPFS against the 3.9 tonnes before the NPFS. For poultry and fishery 2.5units were produced as against 1.3 and 1.5 units for the former and later respectively. There was also an increase in the output of tomatoes. 2.8 units were produced during NPFS against the1.2 units produced before it.
From the research the factors that accounted for the increase in output recorded during the NPFS are; training and visit by extension staff, linkage to suppliers of improved farm input, farmer filled school, credit, supervision; which the NPFS enables farmers to access. The NPFS also encourages farmers to cultivate more.
4.3Test of Hypothesis
Here, an attempt is made to test the following hypothesis formulated for this study;
H0; The National Programme on Food Security has not significantly incresed food production in the study area.
H1; The National Programme on Food Security has significantly incresed food production in the study area.
To test the hypothesis, the data on Table 4.2 on the effect of the NPFS on food production/ output were used. The statistical tool applied by the researcher is the chi-square (x2) distribution.

ABSRACT - [ Total Page(s): 1 ]ABSTRACTThis study was conducted basically to determine the effect of the National Programme on Food Security (NPFS) on output/food product. Its specific objectives include identifying how the NPFS has helped in increasing output and the problems associated with the NPFS. The main instrument for the collection of primary data is the questionnaire. Data were collected from 72 farmers selected through a combination of cluster and random sampling techniques, from a population of about 7290 farmers ... Continue reading---
