The Relevance And Challenges Of Civic Education In Secondary Schools In Nigeria
[A CASE STUDY OF OWERRI MUNICIPAL AREA] -

This research work was conducted inter alia to determine the relevance of civic education in Nigerian secondary school and challenges of teaching civic education as a single independent subject. The public secondary schools in Owerri Municipal in Imo state were used as case studies.
Secondary data which include review of related literatures like academic research works, publications and journals were adequately consulted. Other sources of data were structure questionnaire and oral interview. The data so collected were treated, analysed and presented and their proceed were relevant in testing the hypotheses. Paucity qualified teachers and poor finance were among the major challenges of teaching of civic education. Others include apathy on the new subject and poor awareness of the importance of the subject goal.
Conclusions were drawn based on the results of the findings and it is recommended that civic education should be taught as a subject . it is further recommended that the Ministry of Education should as a matter of urgency approve the teaching of civic education in higher institutions as a course of study.
