• An Investigation On The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On The Academic Achievement Of Student Of Tertiary Institution

    • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of sexual harassment on the academic achievement of student of tertiary institution using Delta State University. Specifically, the study examine perceived causes of sexual harassment on student in tertiary institutions, find out the effect of sexual harassment on the academic achievement of students in higher institution and investigate if there are challenges of indicting the perpetrators of sexual harassment in the school environment. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 259 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that  the  perceived causes of sexual harassment on student in tertiary institutions includes: provocative dressing, lust from male lecturers, bad influence and Poor system for redress.

      The findings also revealed that the effect of sexual harassment on the academic achievement of students in higher institution includes: it bring about stigmatization, depression, low academic achievement and  low self esteem. Finally, the study revealed that there are challenges of indicting the perpetrators of sexual harassment in the school environment. The study thereby recommend that strict policies or laws regarding sexual harassment be applied in the tertiary institutions. Also, there should be medium by which victims of sexual harassment can speak freely and not be victimized.Finally, sexually harassed individuals should not be stigmatized by the public. this calls for public orientation.
