    • This study was carried out to examine the challenges and qualities of a good teacher using 6 selected secondary school in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State as a case study. Specifically, the study aimed at ascertaining the qualities of a good teacher, the challenges of teaching profession; and the relationship between teachers and students in Gboko Local Government Area. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 250 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, The findings revealed that the ability to develop relationships with their students, Patient, caring, and kind personality, Knowledge of learners, Dedication to teaching and Engaging students in learning are among the qualities of a good teacher.

      The findings also revealed that Lack of teamwork, empathy, and support between students, Teachers working too many roles at the same time, Teachers being made accountable for more than they should, Excessive paperwork for data collection, Keeping up with the expectations of school admins, and Applying a prescribed curriculum to all types of students are among the challenges that teaching profession faces.

      The findings further revealed that the kind of relationship between teachers and students in Gboko Local Government Area is a good one. The study recommend Teachers to endeavor to know that their good qualities have effect in the lives of the students and the society at large, therefore, they should do their best to exhibit those good qualities that portray their profession. More so, Government should always protect the interest of teachers and encourage them in any way they can to enable them carry out their duties in the lives of the students effectively and efficiently.
