CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
This chapter presents the method and procedure that was applied in this study for data gathering and analysis. It is organized under the following sub-headings: Research Design, Population of the Study, Sample and Sampling Technique, Research Instrument, Validity/Reliability of the Instrument, Method of Data Collection, and Method of Data Analysis
3.2 Research Design
The research design adopted for the study was a descriptive survey. This design is considered appropriate because it enables the researcher to generate data through the standardized collection procedures based on highly structured research instrument(s) and well-defined study concepts and related variables.
3.3 Population Sample and Sampling Technique
The populations in this research are the students in the four selected senior secondary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. A total sample size of 300 students was randomly selected in all. Seventy five (75) students were selected from each school comprising 25 each from Senior Secondary School (SSS) 1, 2 and 3. Using random sampling technique.
3.4 Research Instrument
A well-constructed and self-developed questionnaire titled “Social Media and Academic Performance of Students Questionnaire (SMAPQ)’’ was used to get the desired pieces of information from students. The questionnaire was divided into three sections (A, B and C). Section A was for collection of information on personal data of respondents, Section B consisted of questions that elicited responses from the students with response options: A, B, C, D while section C elicited responses from teachers with response option: Agree (A) and Disagree (D)
3.5 Validity and Reliability of the Instrument
The designed questionnaire was submitted to the project supervisor for vetting, correction and approval before distributing it to the respondents. The reliability of the research instrument was determined by selecting students across the three departments- Science, Arts and Social Science- in the selected schools. Questionnaire was administered to a sample of male and female students for the main study.
3.6 Method of Data Collection
The researcher collected the needed data through the use of questionnaire and its administration in the selected schools. The administration of the questionnaire was carried out by the researcher. A total of 300 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to elicit responses from the students and teachers and retrieved on the spot by the researcher.
3.7 Method of Data Analysis
Research questions were analyzed using the descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage.
