4.2 Research Questions
Question 1: What is the level of social media utilization on educational attainments and behavioural outcomes of students in secondary schools?
The data in table 1 shows that 84 per cent of the 300 respondents use facebook, 69.7 per cent use whatsapp, 2.7 per cent use twitter, 5 per cent use Youtube, 40 per cent use 2go, 9 per cent use instagram while only 3 per cent of the respondents take exemption to social media activities. A number of respondents visit more than one social media sites or the others to interact with friends and other purposes. This data just implies that a great deal of students in senior secondary schools in Alimosho Local Government engage in social media interactions and communication. This development, however, has the capacity to affect students’ studies either positively or negatively. It is crystal clear that more time will be needed to transverse from one site to another in a bid to interact with people via various social media. Students will have to invest more time to move from one site to another to achieve a purpose. The fact is that most students spend quality time on social media sites but the question remains whether they visit such site (s) for academic purpose or other purposes that have nothing related to their academics.
However with huge number of students engaging in social media activity one would have expected that the utilization would have aided the academic performance but reverse is the case going by the result of the performance in external examination between 2010 and 2015 by the researcher which is nothing to write home about. No wonder many concern school administrators and parents are discouraging students from giving too much attention to social networking site as many of them do not utilize the site positively. It causes distraction to student, steal study time and exposes them to negative influences capable of their goals and dreams.
