Question 2: To what extent would students’ addictiveness to social network influence their academic performance?
Table 2 shows that over 30 per cent of students cannot live a comfortable life daily without visiting social media to interact with friends. They are so addicted to the platforms that they cannot do anything without it. Social media sites occupy the first assignment when students wake up in the morning and the last thing to do at night before going to bed. There is no gain saying in the fact that many students are addicted to these platforms for ‘survival’ daily as most of their friends are reached via the media. Over 90 per cent of students have smart phones to access their social networking sites on the move. Only few of them go to cyber café to access the sites. There is therefore wider opportunity for students to communicate and interact among themselves even while in class using smart phones with internet facilities. This opportunity can therefore afford them to either utilize the platforms to enhance their studies or cause more distractions for them. Despite the fact that the use of mobile phones is prohibited in selected schools, some students still defy the order and continue to not only bring cell phones to schools but use them in class. Their performance in external examination obtained by the researcher in five years consecutively also affirmed that the addiction did not help their study.
