Question 3: Does time spent on social networking site reduced time spent on studies?
The table 3 reveals that no fewer than half of the sampled population of students expends less than two hours daily surfing through the internet accessing their social media sites. In fact, 37 per cent uses about 4 hours daily, about 7 per cent use 6 hours while some used more than 8 hours on the social networking sites each day which amounts to one quarter of the day. A good number of the students also devote night time to access their social networking sites for interaction with friends or any other purposes. This, however, may account for the reason while some of them dose off in class while some other are not in the right emotionally state to receive knowledge being communicated by teachers. When many of them are expected to be on bed to have enough sleep in order to position themselves well for proper assimilation in class, they may be busy surfing through the internet perhaps not for academic purpose but to reach out to friends. This may account for the downturn in the academic performance of students in the recent times as more time is being devoted to social media than personal studies.
