      5.1     Introduction
This chapter gives the summary of the study and presents  conclusions  and  recommendations
      5.2     Summary of the Study
This study investigated social media utilization and academic performance of the students in senior secondary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. The descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study. A sample of 300 respondents was selected from the population of entire students of four selected public schools while a sample of 40 teachers/administrators was also selected of the entire population of teachers in the selected schools.
A simple random sampling technique was used for the selection, where seventy five (75) students were randomly selected from four (4) randomly selected senior secondary schools.
The instrument was validated by four expert in the Department of educational management university of  Ilorin and found to be reliable. It was personally administered by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics of frequency count and percentage.
The study revealed that over 90 per cent of senior secondary school students subscribe to one or more social networking sites and the distractions it cause made some school teachers and administrators to suggest banning of the use of mobile devices for students during school hours. Also, the study showed that students use Facebook, Whatsapp, and 2go more than other social networking sites.
The results obtained showed that, students’ addictiveness to social network has a significant influence on their academic performance. The use of social media has significant negative influence on the academic performance of the students as it consumes a great deal of their time, causes distractions and lack of concentrations.
It also showed that students’ exposures to social media network have significant influence on students’ academic performance and behavioural conducts. It revealed that exposure to negative materials, pictures, music, photos and such other things capable of tempering with the minds and hearts of the youngsters in schools, may bring about anti-social behaviours as well as narcissistic and aggressive tendencies in them.
The analysis revealed that students who utilize social media platform do not perform better than their counterparts who do not use them i.e. the utilization of the social media platforms does not have any corresponding benefits on the academic performance of the students in any respect.
The investigation also revealed that most students find it now preferable, easy and more comfortable to express their thoughts, feelings, desires, intentions and ideas to friends via social media than in real life, while many of them, who have phobia for public speaking even in class because of low self esteem, communicate freely, fluently and more coordinately while chatting on social media. Teachers and school administrators can utilize the platforms to boost academic communications.
It also revealed that despite the fact that the use of mobile phones is prohibited in some schools, some students still defy the order and continue to not only bring cell phones to schools but use them in class. School authorities are not vigilant enough to monitor students who still engage in this act.
      5.3     Findings and Conclusions
The result from the findings of this study showed that social media have negative effects on teenagers such as distracting students from their academic work, taking most of their productive hours daily as well as exposing them to negative influences capable of negatively redirecting their mind and heart from their goals.
We found out that the social networking sites mostly used by students as Facebook, Whatsapp, and 2go to interact with online communities of their choice It was also discovered that over 90 per cent of students engage in social media activities daily.
