    • 2.5Concept of students’ academic performance
      Academic performances mean how learners are able to deal with their studies and cope with, or accomplish different tasks. Academic performances could also mean students’ performances or learning outcome in a particular subject after conducting a test or an examination. Bamgbose and Owojaiye, (2008) academic ability (high, medium or low) of the students has found to play a major influence on the performances of students. It is noted that high ability students do perform better than low ability students. This is in line with the observation of Owaseye (2014) who stated that genders are not the issue but the academic ability. She affirmed that gender does not play any significant role. She stated that both male and female students of high ability to perform well, while low ability of male and female students perform woefully in their various subjects but, the low ability students perform a bit encouraging when they are taught by an experienced and qualify teachers.
      Issues relating to students’ academic performances have enjoyed continuous publications since 1933. Johnson reported that since 1933, the importance of performances and progress in schools have been consistently emphasized. For example, Samder’s (1987) article, on this issue:“student’s academic achievement: a necessary tool for successful entry in to today‘s job market” reported an important study that provided some ideas on how to move towards improving academic performances.
      Other articles, though varied in their perspectives, provide important information on achievement related to students’ academic performances. Their contributions include the ways school can provide vital academic and social support to the students learning in the classroom situations. Researchers have investigation what really constitutes students’ academic achievement, and they came up with many findings. For example, Gay (2009) found out that students’ academic achievement is very important in every educational institution, primary, secondary and tertiary. He added that student’ academic achievement is  the result of assessment of students in all area of academic subjects, basic learning skills and intellectual development.
      Furthermore, the level of academic skill necessary for successful entry into today’s job market, with or without a college of education, has risen to the point that a focus on achieving academic success in necessary for all students throughout their years of schooling from kindergarten to the university. Researchers have also established that parent who check the assignment given to their children every day and provide all the needed writing materials will produce highly successful children in academics. Conversely, non-challant attitude of parents towards the education of their children also encourage poor performances.
      In Nigeria, the secondary school students’ academic performances is determined by examination bodies such as the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the National Examination Council (NECO), National Board for Technical Education (NABTEB) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).students’ academic achievement has been described as the major determinant of school effectiveness.
      Cotton (1983) also mentions that results of students’ examination influence school reputation and the number of new student that would apply for admission into the school. Glasser (1990) and Sergioranni (1987) concluded that students’ academic achievement is a full- proof of how the resource committed to teaching and learning has been utilized
      2.6    Teachers’ attitude to the teaching profession and students’ academic performances in secondary schools.
                  A teacher is a person who undergoing approved  professional training in education at appropriate levels capable of imparting knowledge,  attitudes and skills to the learner while teaching is a systematic rational and organized process of transmitting knowledge, attitudes and skills in accordance with professional principles.
      In order to achieve the aims, goals and specific instruction objectives of teaching, the teacher must plan for what to teach and how to teach it effectively. Teachers need to take into cognizance the differences in the students’ ability to learn. Some students learn slowly while other learns very fast. To put the teaching and learning in the right perspective, there is need to   consider   the method adopted in teaching each subject effectively (Owaseye, 2014).
      There are many method and techniques of teaching. These methods include storytelling method, discovery method, lecture method, project method and discussion method. Discussion method is an organized, unique, logical related step-by-step procedure of teaching specific aspects of a subject or topic with the aim of achieves. These methods allowing the participants to put together their ideas and knowledge, it makes students to talk and evaluate themselves and also promote learning and understanding.
