School Population And Academic Performance Of Basic School Students

Ho2: There is no significant relationship between small class size and students academic performance in Ilorin west local government area Kwara state.
Table 5 shows that calculated r-value of .459 is grater than critical value of .795 at 0.05 level of significance main while hypotheses is rejected meaning that there is significance relationship between small class size and students academic performance in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara state.
The study investigated the relationship between school population and students academic performance of Universal Basic Schools in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara state.
The study revealed that there was significant relationship between population and students academic performance of Universal Basic School in Kwara State and this findings justify Oyedeji (2012) who asserted that population in the class determine effectiveness of teachers and it also determine student performance in secondary schools. He stressed further that if number of student in class is appropriately as indicated in National Policy of Education, there is tendency that performance of student would be averagely ok.
The study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between large class size and students’ academic performance and this also in line with that of Oyedeji (2012). There was also significant relationship between small class size and students’ academic performance.
Study also revealed low level of enrolment in the Basic schools and it pointed out the factors responsible for the low enrolment are;
Non- challant attitude of government
Illiteracy among the parent
Poverty
Ineffective in the part of teacher etc
This also in line with Adeyinka (2000) who claimed that non-challant attitude of government and poverty are the major cause of low enrolment in basic schools.
