    • Finally, teachers in the school have the responsibility of labeling the students but negative labeling like backward child, underachiever, maladjusted child, troublesome child and the like should be avoided and replaced with highly spirited child, an active student, a promising child and so on. If labeling is wrongly and unreliably applied it can damage the student’s future or ruin the students’ career completely which has a great deal on student’s academic performance and discipline.  For instance, a child who is labeled” empty barrel” will lose hope in academic struggle and join the syndicates of examination malpractice. A child who is labeled “Yanki” will prefer to dress indecently and communicate in erotic languages and so on. The role of teachers in inculcating discipline and improving the academic performance of students cannot be overemphasized. In fact, without teachers, our society would not be able to function as a global competitor.
      Who is a Teacher
          A teacher is a person who is trained to inform education and train a group of learners. A teacher can be described by the nature of functions performed and services rendered rather than according to a rigid definition. This stand corroborate Good’s (1973) definition that a teacher is “a person who because of rich or unusual experience or education or both in a given field is able to contribute to the growth and development of other persons who come in contact with him; a person who instruct others”.   A teacher is also a person who has a knowledge of the subject matter and an awareness of the fact that to teach also means to research.
          According to Good, 1973. A teacher is that person who imparts knowledge, a transmitter of societal virtues, a socializer, a model, a pacesetter, an innovator, a manager of learning and instruction, and an evaluator (a judge). To a great extent, a teacher is a sociologist, a psychologist, a moralist, a leader and a manager.
          From this analysis it is clear that for a person to be called a teacher, he must be exposed to various theories of learning, child psychology, measurement and evaluation, history, educational technology, sociology etc. These experiences must come from a recognized teacher educational institution backed up with a certificate.
      Qualities of a Good Teacher
          There is no doubt that in our educational system, we have both good and bad teachers. The good teacher within the system can be recognized and adequately rewarded. Although there is no amount of money that will be given to a good and effective teacher that can adequately compensates him for the job he is doing for pupils/students and for the community at large.
          For the avoidance of doubt whom can we call a good teacher? A good teacher is that teacher that is competent, effective and successful teaching.
          Owies (2003) stated that a good teacher should possess the following qualities.
      1.    He should be helpful in school work. Explains lesson and assignment clearly using several examples in teaching
      2.    He should be cheerful, happy and have sense of humor, taker a joke and good nature.
      3.    He is humane, friendly and compassionate
      4.    He is always interested on students’ problems.
      Other qualities are as follows:
      1.    His willingness to be flexible as the situation demand
      2.    His capacity to perceive  the work from student’s point of view
      3.    The ability to personalize the teaching
      Bell Gam (1999) identified several basic qualities a good teacher should possess. The qualities are:
      1.    A good teacher should be master of his subject
      2.    He should always prepare his lesson note  before going to the class to teach
      3.    He should have the skill of effective classroom administration, since this is necessary for effective teaching
      4.    He should be well dressed
      5.    Above all, a good teacher should not only love teaching but should love teaching children.
