Functions and Achievement Of PTA
The organization of PTA meeting is the school best means of communication with the parents of the school pupils/students. In this gathering, information and ideas about the child are exchange and plans for furthering in their best subject are fully developed.
Majority of our community today especially Oyun Local Government Area, Kwara State, the Parents Teachers Association has long been playing major and unique roles in the physical, moral, social and economic development of their various schools.
The Kwara State government of education edict, 1972, section 10, states that every school or institution in the state shall establish a PTA which shall provide a link and a forum for communication between the parents and the teachers of the pupils attending their institution in question, in respect of all matters affecting the said institution.
According to Abida (1962), the function of Parents Teachers Association is grouped into two major parts, which are:
1. Helping in the development of the physical plan of the school
2. Co-operating in helping children to grow properly, mentally, physically, socially and morally. As a matter of fact, Abida’s classification of the functions of PTA was broad but his list of values association with the section functions is simple and comprehensive.
In addition, to all other functions mentioned above, the Parents Teachers Association also offers useful service such as raising of funds. This is in no small measure has been demonstrated in various Secondary Schools in Oyun Local Government Area, Kwara State.
Dubey et al (1981), pointed out that the organization could be used vigorously to upgrade teaching and learning quality in the following ways:
1. It can serve as a forum in which parents and teachers exchange useful idea for the improvement of their learning ability of the children.
2. It can be used to strengthen the authority of the school in the event of discipline problems.
3. Schools can enlist the co-operation of parents in the organization of such secondary school even as boy’s brigade and young farmers clubs. From a close study, the parents teachers association educationally award scholarship to some brilliant students and prizes to others on a prize giving ceremony.
Over the years, the Parents Teachers Association has record great achievements in administration of school community relationship.
It is wise to say that there is nothing that has advantage without disadvantages. In spite of all the recorded achievement and contributions of PTA,yet itis true that there are problems associated with the PTA in secondary school administration in Oyun Local Government Area, Kwara State. It must however, be noted that these problems emanated as a result of lack of influence in school community relationship on the side of the teachers. Some parent’s wants teachers only to help in the instruction of subject and normal training of their children and no more.
Other important problems encountered by the Parents Teachers Association are: Lack of funds and the inability of parents to respond to invitations of meetings. Very many high percentages of parents do not care to attend the association meetings. The presence of such meetings could have gone a long way to encourage and enhance smooth running of the day-to-day activities of the schools.
