Discussion of Results
This section gives detailed explanations on the various findings discovered from the research questions. For instance, the findings on the research question one which states that what the extent of parents’ involvement is in the academic process of students revealed that parents are moderately involve in the academic process of students. The finding of the study is similar to that of Obasi&Asodike (2007) who pointed out that since there is no government financial presence, the school fees take care of the entire cost of the school even up to payment of staff salaries and fees are graded according to school site, location and status of the school. This assertion supports the need to adequately define and differentiate the role of PTA in imposition of development levies in private schools. The finding on the research question two revealed that Parents Teachers Association helps to recruit part-time teachers in case of insufficient. This finding confirmed the finding that corroborates that of Adewuyi (2002) who also submitted that active parents involvement and positive home-school-community relations have been shown to positively influence effective schooling and students’ achievements.
The finding on the research question three revealed that Parents Teachers Association are moderately involved in the administration of secondary school and discipline. This finding confirmed the finding that corroborates that of Ajayi (1999) who posited that effective administration of schools could be hampered where the PTA is not performing its roles as expected. Also, Ajayi (2007) posited that, schools and the communities are interdependent and interrelated and for the relationship between them to be meaningful, worthwhile and productive, they must be willing to assist each other to achieve their respective goals in atmosphere of love, mutual trust and cooperation.
The finding on the research question four revealed that parents are moderately involved in the school administration of Secondary Schools. The finding of the study is similar to that of Omoregie (2006) who submitted that the secondary schools are no longer effective. The author argued that the secondary schools are haven of criminals where future thugs are bred. The study showed that there was no significant relationship between parents’ involvement in school administration and secondary school effectiveness. Considering the level of participation of parents in school activities, it could be expected that this involvement would enhance the tone of the school and contribute to the effectiveness of the school, but this study has proved otherwise. This implies that parents’ involvement in school administration may not guarantee effectiveness in the schools.
The finding on the research question five revealed that indiscipline in secondary schools in the affected locations is due to lack of cooperation between parents and school authorities. The findings of the study is similar to that of Henderson (1987) and Hick (1992) who opined that effectiveness of the schools, as revealed in their studies might have been caused by some other factors not considered in this study. The findings of the study therefore contradicts that of Sammons, Hillman and Mortimore (1995). The contradictory finding in respect of parents’ involvement in school administration and school effectiveness may not be divorced from the environment where the research was carried out.
