      RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
      The aim of this research work is to investigate in details the relationship between professional development programmes and teachers' effectiveness in secondary schools in Ilorin-west LGA. Kwara State. This chapter deals with the steps that were used in carrying out this study. The methodology is discussed under the following sub-headings;
      •    Research Design
      •    Population, Sample and Sampling Techniques
      •    Instrumentation
      •    Method of Data Collection
      •    Method of Data Analysis
      Research Design
      The research design adopted for this study is descriptive research design using survey method. The survey research is a method which involves an investigation on an entire population and assuming that this sample are through representatives of the entire population. Descriptive research in education gives a picture of situation or a population and specifies the nature of a given sample. This design was considered appropriate taking into consideration the focus on the study which intends to investigate staff development and teachers' effectiveness in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State. This method ensured careful records of data collected so that the researcher can analyze the information generated from representative sample of the population, describe the situation as it exist and reach reasonable conclusion about the entire population.
      Population, Sample and Sampling Techniques
      The target population of this study comprised 702 teachers in the 57 secondary schools in Ilorin-west LGA of Kwara State. According to Kreijcie and Morgan (1970) sample determination table, the appropriate sample for a population of 702 is 310. This is done using proportional sampling technique. Thus the sample of the study was310 teachers chosen randomly using proportional sampling technique.
      Instrumentation
      The instrument used in this study or data collection is questionnaire. The questionnaire tagged “Professional Development Programmes Questionnaire (PDPQ)". This was designed for teachers to supply information. Students’ academic performance proforma was used to collect information for teachers’ effectiveness. Since the students’ academic performance in WASSCE for five years was used to measure the teachers effectiveness
      Validity refers to the accuracy with which an instrument measure the characteristics of interest, which claims to measure. In order to ensure the validity of the instrument used, the draft copy of the questionnaire was given to my project supervisor to assess the face and content validity of the instrument. Based on the corrections made, the final copies were drawn and used for data collection.
      Reliability is concerned with the consistency of a measuring instrument. Test-retest method was adopted to ensure the reliability of the instrument. This was done by administering the questionnaire to 10 respondents that were not part of the sample of the study twice with two weeks interval. The two data were correlated to and the co-efficient of variation was 0.67 which showed high degree of reliability of the instrument.
      Method of Data Collection
      The researcher with the help of two research assistants personally visited each of the sampled schools to administer the instruments and collect the instruments after completion
      Method of Data Analysis
      Percentage was used to analyze the research questions while Pearson moment correlation statistics was used to test the hypotheses formulated because all the hypotheses dealt with relationship between two variables.
