Public and private secondary schools could help in the attainment of the following goals:
1. Discipline among the staff and students.
2. Conducive environment for learning.
3. Appropriate teaching facilities.
4. Moral conduct among students.
5. Motivation and reward for excellent performance.
Differences Between Public and Private Secondary Schools.
Here are instances of the differences between public and private secondary schools.
1. Strike:
Academic and non-academic staff of public schools can embark on occasional strikes to demand for salary arrears and good working conditions while private schools allocate sufficient amount of fund for salary remuneration which in turn motivate their staff to train the students as best as they can.
2. Funding:
Since private schools are privately funded, they are obviously more expensive, tuition in a private school is a lot more than it is in a public schools.
3. Learning conditions or class size:
The student population of a public school makes it hard for students to learn and assimilate. In public schools, students are so many that some sit on the floor, window frames and even on the table just to learn. Private schools are hardly faced with issues like these because they ensure that students are kept in conducive environment and that student population is properly managed.
4. Stable academic calendars:
One major quality of private schools in Nigeria and elsewhere in the world is stable academic calendar. Public secondary schools are characterised by incessant strike actions, strike action usually take away valuable times of the students and thereby preventing them from acquiring the required knowledge. Also, the disruption of academic calendar makes the financial planning for the education of children very difficult for parents. Therefore, parents prefer to choose private secondary schools for their children.
5. Students discipline:
The issue of moral decadence and high of indiscipline among students of secondary schools in Nigeria had become a source of concern to stakeholders. However, with the opportunities of private participation in the provision and management of education, it is possible for many missionaries bodies to intervene in the educational system. These missionary bodies are widely known to be good provides of moral education which help in shaping the behaviors of Nigeria students.
6. Political Factor:
Public schools are affected by local politics, some districts are budget-strapped and have to run more efficiently than others. Sometimes politics affects the public schools district more than private schools. By not relying on tax payer funds, private schools have more freedom in this regards. This is one often-used argument for why private schools are better sometimes.
7. Admission procedures:
Public schools have to accept everyone but private schools technically do have to. They can have test assessment before granting admission.
8. Status:
Just as word implies, private gives the impression of prestige and high standing. Private is expensive and it is not for everyone, many students in private schools have the mindset that they are better than their counterparts in public schools.
9. Teaching methods:
Teaching methods in private schools is different from public schools, private schools implement different teaching styles depending on who is in charge, proper instructional materials are been used in private schools but public schools lack fund due to this they do not use up to date instructional materials.
10. Academic Quality:
In Nigeria, private schools are known to be given qualitative secondary education to the populace by striving to provide good facilities such as library, modern and well equipped laboratories, well managed hostels, conducive classrooms as so on. All these are compromised in public secondary schools.
