CONCEPT OF COMPUTER
Adewoyin (2002) opined that computer is an electronic device which can receive appropriate information and is capable of processing the output according to a set of previously supplied information and instruction and making result (outputs) available as desire, those sets of previously supplied instructions are otherwise referred to as computer programs.
Adewumi (2010) sees computer as a secondary category of amplified human intelligence with certain properties such as:
a. The computer can provide a new-time dimension by being programmed to perform repetitive process at high speed. People are free from doing complicated calculations or analysis so that they can use their time more creatively even on complex issues
b. The computer has ability to perform certain logical operations by manipulating symbols such as letters, members, words, sentences, mathematical operation and symbols to perform simple comparism and depending on the results, follows some stated courses of actions. The computer can make decisions by choosing alternative courses of action.
c. Computer has been provided with the ability to store data or information electronically and retrieve such data as the need arises; In the same vein, Ayo (2013) defined computer as a machine which automatically process data in accordance with a programme of instruction stored without computers and then provides the result in useful form. These sets of previously supplied instructions arc otherwise referred to as computer programs.
A contemporary computer system consists of central processing units and four other hardware devices, secondary storage, input devices, output devices and communication devices. (Sometimes called main memory) where data and program instruction are stored temporarily during processing. The characteristics of the CPU are very important in determining the speed and capabilities of the computer.
The primary storage has three functions. It stores all or part of the program that manage the operative of the computer. It also holds data that are being used by the program. Data and programs are placed in primary storage before processing, between processing steps and other processing has ended, prior to being returned to secondary storage or released as output. (Adewumi, 2010).
The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) performs the principal logical and arithmetic operations of the computer. The ALU need only add and subtract numbers in order to do multiplication and division as well as addition and subtraction. Multiplication is simply rapid addition and division is rapid subtraction. In addition to performing these arithmetic functions, an ALU must be able to determine when one quantity is greater or less than another and when two quantities are equal. The ALU can perform logical operations on the binary codes for letters as well as numbers.
Human beings interact with computer systems largely through input and output devices. Advances in information systems rely not only on the speed and capacity of the CPU but also in the speed, capacity and design of the input and output devices.
The traditional method of data only has been by keyboarding. Data entry clerks used a keypunch machine to code characters an 80 column card, designing each character with a unique punch in a specific location on the card. These methods are being replaced by more efficient and direct methods of input, although some firms still use them for their older birth application. Such input devices include:
The Computer Mouse: The "print and click" buttons of the computers more have made it an increasingly popular alternative to keyboard and text based commands. A mouse is a hand¬held device that is usually connected to the computer by a cable. The computer user moves the mouse around on a desktop to control the position of the cursor on a video display screen. Once the cursor is in the desired position, the user can push a button on the mouse to select a command.
Touch Screen: Touch screens are easy to use and are applicable to people who cannot use traditional keyboards. Users can enter-limited amounts of data by touching the surface of a sensitive video display monitor with a finger or a pointer. With colourful graphics sound and simple menus, touch screens allow the user to make selections by touching specified parts of the screen.
The major data output devices are cathcode ray tube (CRT) terminals (sometimes called video display terminals or VDTs) and printers.
The CRT is probably the most popular form of information output in modern computer system; It works much like television picture to be with an electrical "gun" shooting a beam of elections to illuminate the pixels on the screen. The more pixels per screen, the higher the resolution.
Printers: Printer produces a printed copy of information output. They include impact printers. (A standard typewriter or a dot matrix) and an impact printers (laser, inkjet and thermal transfer printers).
