Computer Packages for educational administration
There are various types of application software which can be used for educational administration purpose. Application programs are produced for commercial and general-purpose managements environments and are not specifically dedicated to educational contexts.
Word Processor
A word processor is a program which converts the computer program with sophisticated electronic typewriter, with the added advantage that it can store and record all the text that is typed into it instead of transferring the text directly into paper, the computer stores the text in it's memory and displays the document one page at a time on the monitor. It has a set of commands which enables us to delete characters, words, lines or whole paragraphs, to enter new text and to move passage of text ad to move passage of text from one place to another within the document.
Word processor can handle very long document of up to a book length and the limitation is imposed by the computer's own memory and disk-storage capacity. All word processors offers facilities for document formatting, such as front changes, page layout, paragraph indention, and the likes. Words processor can also check spellings, find synonyms, incorporates graphics created with another program, correctly aligns mathematical formulas, creates and prints standard letters, perfonn calculation, display documents in multiple on screen windows and enables users to record macros that simplify difficult or repetitive operations.
Microsoft Excel
Spreadsheet is types of computer software program that has become essential in many business operations since its introduction in 1978. It is named after an accountant's spreadsheet in which numerical or text data or formulas are displayed in rows and column. What is displayed on the screen therefore is a grid composed of cell resembling a piece of graph paper. If we types mathematical formula into one of the cells, the computer will memorize the formula and display the result of the formula in the cell.
The great advantage of the spreadsheet comes in the speed with which calculations can be performed over and over again. If having completed a model we alter the value of one variable in on, the computer will re-calculate the entire spreadsheet and all those formulae in other cells anywhere in the spreadsheet that are affected by such a change.
Spreadsheet makes educational works easier in organizing information, computation of student's grade point (G.P), or results, staff payroll and planning by taking decision for future actions.
Database Management System (DBMS)
A database management system enables the computer user to maintain a database called an electronic filing cabinet. A database simply stores in the computer's memory the same information that one would otherwise keep in folders or record cards in an office.
The great advantage of the computer is that it can manipulate this information much more quickly than a human being. If the database is quite large, the computer can sort through the records and select them or select information from them and it can also order them far faster than any human operator.
As a result, the database program can be motivated to print out or report on appropriate selections from the data easily and quickly. A database consists of collection of files. These are simply collections of records relating to a particular category of information. Some common examples of educational files that are frequently kept includes student's records, test/examination results staff records book stocks, equipment inventory, bibliographies and book lost, item banks for test, extra-cultural activities and suppliers.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
The pace of change brought about by new techno logics has had a significant effect on the way people live, work and play worldwide. ICT is having a major impact across all curriculum areas. Easy worldwide communication provides instant access to a vest array of data, challenge assimilation and assessment skills-rapid communication plus increased access to computer in school or educational establishment could mean that learning becomes a truly-life-long activity, an activity in which the pace of technological change forces constant evaluation of the teaching- learning process itself.
The knowledge of computer has enhance teaching and learning in Public Secondary School Oorelope Local Government Area through it's dynamic, interactive, flexible and engaging content. It provides real opportunities for individualized instruction, it has the potential to accelerate improve and deepen skills; to motivate and engage students in learning; to help create economic viability for tomorrow workers, contribute to radical changes in school and the world.
