5.0 CONCLUSION
This digital clock is designed to display real time clock and calendar. There were lots of problems encountered while working on this project. These include generating clock signal of 1sec from 4Mz clock signal of the MCU, Synchronizing the timing along with the scanning of the display simultaneously and writing code fired into the microcontroller. Other problems encountered include choice of components, obtaining and interpreting datasheet of components for proper biasing. These problems were solved after due consultation and gathering of information. This device has two displays for the day and date display. These displays are multiplexed with second and year display. These can be viewed when the down button is held down while this device is working. This device consumes less than two watts which means it can be battery operated for a very long time. Error is found to be 3sec after a period of four weeks.
PIC16F877 is a microcontroller will little power consumption, hence gives an advantage in the area of power supply. It is responsible for the control of the clock and could be reprogrammed many times for different time schedules. Two sources of power supplies can be used to power this device, the mains and back up battery.
The project has really broadened my knowledge in electronics and I believe Nigerian engineering students can really do a lot in uplifting the image of the great nation in terms of Engineering/Technology.
5.1 RECOMMENDATIONS
This device only measures time with calendar functions. In future, it can be designed to display the day of the week, i.e. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday etc along with alarm function. Tones to indicate time of the day can also be included. A real time clock module can be incorporated in future and the display can be changed to LCD for more power saving and hence long duration operation. Sub-systems such as fault diagnostics could be incorporated into the design. Proper diagnostic routines will facilitate fast and reliable recovery of facility equipment.
