According to Ibileye (2000), a diphthong contains a combination of two different monothongs. To produce a diphthong, the tongue glides from one vowel position to another. The length and loudness associated with the glides is concentrated on the first sound and reduces gradually as the articulators move towards the second sound. There are eight diphthongs in English language.
The English Diphthongs are divided into three, namely those that end in /u/, e.g. /∂u, au/; those that end in /∂/, e.g. /i∂, e∂, u∂/ and those that end in /i/, e.g. /ei, ai, i/, Yusuf (2000).
