3.3 Nigerian English Semantics
It is noticed that if there is distortion in the syntax, that is, structure, use and distributional properties of words in a sentence, this affects meaning automatically. Again, if there is distortion in the lexis selected and used meaning is also drastically affected. Affirming this, Jowitt (107) says that syntax trespasses upon the territory of morphology, lexis and semantics.†Crystal (91) equally notes that “words (lexical items) sit uneasily at the boundaries between morphology and syntaxâ€. The above excerpts testify the interrelatedness of lexis, syntax, morphology and ultimately semantics. The latter borders on meaning and this, no doubt, is determined by the structure and properties of the former. Semantics therefore is the linguistic study of meaning A majority of Nigerian English users produce words and expressions that are semantically different from standard conventions. Hence we often have outright semantic shift and lots of extensions of meaning.
A cursory view of some Nigerian English semantics will suffice.
