      3.0    RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
      3.1    INTRODUCTION
          This chapter seeks to explain the method employed in this research. To achieve the objectives of this study, the outline of this chapter will include the following:
      •    Research design
      •    Area of study
      •    Population of study
      •    Sampling techniques
      •    Research instrument
      •    Method of data
      3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN
          A research design is a plan which specifies how data relating to a given problem should be collected and analyzed.
      It provides the procedures for the conduct of any given investigation. For the purpose of this research work, the researcher has decided to use the descriptive research design. A descriptive design studies is concerned with describing events as they are, without any manipulation of what is being observed.
          The descriptive research is suitable for this study because the study id the effect of mother tongue in the learning of English language in secondary schools in Ilorin West Local Government Areas of Kwara State.
      3.3    AREA OF STUDY
          The area covered by this study is some selected secondary schools in Ilorin West local Government area of Kwara State, where mother tongue is mostly used as the medium of communication outside the school environment.
      3.4    POPULATION OF STUDY
          Population refers to all the people in a given geographical area. In research the term is used in a more general sense to include all members or elements, human being, animals, trees, objects, events, etc. (Nworgu 94)
          The population of this study comprises SSS1-SSS3 students and all English language teachers of the four selected secondary schools I Ilorin west local government area of kwara state. These schools were:

      •    Government Girls Day Secondary School. Oko Erin.
      •    Queen Elizabeth Secondary School. Ilorin.
      •    Government Day Secondary School. Oke-Aluko.
      •    Government Day Secondary School. Odo-Okun.
      3.5 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES.
          Due to the large number of the target population, the entire population could not be studied. Out of over fifteen secondary schools in Ilorin west local government area, four schools were selected for the study through random sampling. The English teachers and English students were used as population sample size.
      3.6 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
          Questionnaire will be used as an instrument for data collection. The questionnaire items were developed from the research questions. The questions were divided into sections to address various areas of research items for teachers and students.
      All questionnaires were filled on the spot and collected. The terminal examinations and WAEC and NECO results in English language were collected from 2014-2016 respectively.
      Other instrument for data collection was through:
      •    Tapes (which consist of storytelling, pronunciations of words reading of comprehension passages and answering questions from comprehension passages)
      •    Written composition
      3.7 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
          The data were analyzed by the use of tables and percentage. Percentage scores for the questions were computed.
