1. Derivation processes which involve affixation process of prefix and suffix
2. The tonal pattern of the Igbo language
3. The verb extension process.
In contrasting the two language in contact, it is evident that there is similarities in the area of derivational process. These derivational processes are: Prefixation and suffixation.
Prefixation: Prefixes are added before the root word of another word-class to form a new word preferably. Verb Examples: if en-is prefixed to the following adjectives, we have a new word like verb.If en-is prefixed to the following nouns, we have a new word like verb.
While the Igbo like the English process prefixes by adding before the verb root to form or determine the tense of the verbs. Examples:
na-ere (is selling) finite present na-ere-bu (was selling) past tense ire(to sell) infinitive again the English suffixes are added after a root of another word-class to form a new word such as verb. Example, are if-ize is suffixed to the following nouns, we have verbs.Similarly, the Igbo also suffixed by adding after the verb root to form a new tense of the verb. Example:
ree (sell) present tense rere (sold) past tense rego (has sold) present perfect regorii (has sold) past perfect
The above contrast indicates that the English and Igbo verb formation processes are similar only in the affixation. While the English inflectional processes predicts the differences that the English has over Igbo verb formation process.
