A Contrastive Analysis Of Conjugation Of English And Igbo Verbs

Verbs are conjugated into past tense form by changing the vowel sounds of the present form of the verb.
Verb of English language has been analysed, pointing out various conjugating processes, which when contrast with that of Igbo language to explain if there are similarities and differences existing between them.
The Igbo formation processes like that of English language can be analysed as follows:
The formation of past tense of verb in the Igbo language is by adding to the verbroot (prefixing and suffixing) e.g.Igbo verbs are conjugated through tonation as stated above. The interfixes or middiary affixes, that is, letters that are added in between two roots e.g.
The two languages whose verb forms are presented have shown that there are similarities and differences existing in the formation of their verbs. The use of contrastive analysis in this study has proved the discrepancies existing as problems to teachers and learners of languages etc, as well as advantage to language study over that of error analysis as a methodology for language teaching and language learning.
