These examples reveal that audio materials could readily be made available either in the natural ( real) or representation ( recorded) forms
Visual materials: These are teaching and learning materials that appeal mainly to the sense of sight or vision (eye) done. They could be made available either in their representational or real visual form ( Farrant 2008). Some examples of visual materials are:
a. Some specimens e.g fairing and hunting implements.
b. Pictures e.g real photography, book illustrations hand drawn diagrams and printing charts, graphs, poster and map.
c. Model e.g Museni materials
d. Chalkboard diagram and sketches, bulleting or notice board, display, plastic graph board materials, and display.
e. All kinds of printed or handwriting materials e.g textbooks, hand out, magazines
Audio Vitual Materials: These are instructional materials that appeal to the two sense of hearing and seeing simultaneously, such as touch smell and taste as well. It is observed that audio-visual materials are probably the most effective resources materials in the teaching process.
Dele (2009) gives examples of audio-visual materials which include the following:
(a) Open channel and closed circuit television
(b) Audio tape ( V.T.R.) and play back equipment
(c) Sound films trip projects.
(d) Video disc.
Roles and Importance of instructional materials in teaching and learning
Geography
The use of instruction materials by the teacher is based on careful and sound rationale ( Iye warun 2009). Perhaps it is relevant to say that the advancement in modern technology and it recorgination in educational institutes in the use of instructional materials much teaching could be carried without the teacher being accused of our verbalization, excess use of words in teaching learning process ( Otune, 2004).
According to Ralph (2005) while writing on the use of instructional materials, stated that “no materials should be used haphazardly there is a right and a wrong way to introduce it into lessâ€.
a. The aid may be a means of introducing subject or stimulate interest.
b. It may be intended as the main body of the lesson i.e the chief vehicle for stimulating the new information.
c. It may be pieces of recapitulating materials during the course of exciting the lessons, they are as follows “Preparation, presentation, evaluation and follow-upâ€.
According to Ajelabi (2002), Otunle (2005), Adegbija (2007), Ajayi (2008), Ojukurola (2009), Olajide (2010), and identified some roles and importance of instructional materials, some of their views and others are highlight below:
a. Instructional materials should be extension of the imagination of students beyond what they can easily think about or appreciate students are in better positioned to think beyond their immediate environment when teachers make use of instructional materials and when there is no limitation to their imaginative power, more learning we be achieved.
b. Instructional materials should be make abstract issue to be concertize and the impression of the students are reinforced and retained for further use of other subjects are even transferring it to their day – to – day life.
c. Instructional materials ensure the presentation of ideals sequentially and systematically. These makes it possible for the teacher and learners to progress from simple concept to the difficult ones and there by avoiding confusion in the process.
d. Mastery of the skills is also made possible by the use of instructional materials most especially in mathematics.
e. As some of these resourced are products of specialist who are more knowledgeable than the regular classroom teachers, they can easily replace the teachers.
f. Education is more productive and useful when there is adequate use of instructional materials because students have more skills and deeper insight into concept unlike when they are taught abstractly or verbally.
