According to Yekin (2006) the, Kwara State Government is set to
eradicate all members of child trafficking in the state. The
commissioner for social welfare, Pastor Moses Awojobi, dis-closed this
to news men at the end of executive council meeting on Wednesday 3rd of
May, 2006. He said, the state government was disturbed at the rate
children were being used hawk around the streets and for domestic works.
He also said, the government was determined to see that children 17
found hawking would be arrested while his/her parents would be
prosecuted. The commissioner said, effort were on to enlighten the
public on the dangers that such children were exposed to. He said,
education is the bedrock of any civilized society and as such, the state
governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, was determined to give qualitative
education to children in the state.
With the above, it is
glaring that child trafficking cut across the entire ethnic groups in
Nigeria and not only as always being claimed by many people.
According to Out (2003), child trafficking either for domestic
agricultural labourers or sex works has permitted the whole country.
This trade should not be war with our nieghbours, these kids could be
armed to fight against Nigeria. Viewed from that perspective,
trafficking is a potent threat to national security.
The Nigeria
fell magazine clearly shows the prevalence of child trafficking when it
narrated a short story about a young girl who was introduced into the
business innocently as thus; Efosah, 17 years old lined with her mother
in Lagos. After her secondary school education, she was limited by a
neighbour to Italy, Efosah was taken to a house where six other Nigerian
girls were working for a Madam. At this point, they told her that she
was owing 7 million Naira (7,000 US dollar) which is about N700,000
(seven hundred thousand naira). She was immediately locked up in room,
her traveling document were seized and an attempt to escape attracted
beating and torture. She was servicing four to twelve men in a day.
After a year, Efosah became sick and unable to service not more than
three men in a day. She was dropped at the roadside where she was later
picked up by police operation. Along side with 87 other girls were
deported.
Worst forms of child labour convention (WFCLC 1999),
also narrated a story of a widow woman called Adjoba, originated comes
from the village of Bandakon (Cote d’Ivoire), but lived in Abidjan since
the fifties. She has four adult children without fixed job, she tries
to pay her monthly rent of 17,500 FCFA (24.50 US Dollar) by pedding at
the district market. If this fails to provide enough to line, how can
she manage? By recruiting young girls aged 7 to 15 years with promises
of help preparing for marriage. Then, she offers their services as
domestics. The elderly woman collects their salaries every month. When
the girl reaches puberty, she may be returned to her village where
Adjoba contributes to the girl’s dowry.
