CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY
Introduction
This study investigated the causes and consequences of child trafficking as perceived by adults in Shaki West Local Government Area, Oyo State. This chapter focuses on the procedures that were used in carrying out the study. These procedures include the research design, sample and sampling procedure, instrumentation, procedure for data administration and collection, procedure for scoring and method of data analysis.
Research Design
The research that was employed in this research is descriptive survey method. Descriptive survey method was employed because of enables the researchers to obtain the options of representation sample of target population so as for inter the perception of the entire population. Sax (1986) asserted that survey method of investigations focuses on people and their beliefs, opinion exactly as they exist. Hassan (1995) also noted that descriptive method of researcher represents an attempt to provide an accurate descriptive or picture of a particular situation or phenomenon at one or more points in time. Abdullahi (1995) stated that survey research includes direct contact with a population or sample that has characteristics, personality qualities or attitude which are relevant to a specific investigation.
In a nutshell, considering these definitions by various authors the researcher considered the descriptive survey appropriate to investigate the cause and consequences of child trafficking as perceived by Adults in Shaki West Local Government Area, Oyo State.
Sample and Sampling Procedure
The target population for this study comprises men and women (married and single adults) in Ilorin metropolis. The respondents in the target population were randomly selected round the 3 local government areas in Ilorin. The researcher then served 73 questionnaires in each of the district on proportional sampling basis. Sample random was used in selecting the respondents that took part in the study. According to Daramola (1998), sample random sampling techniques is a sampling technique in which each element of the population has an equal chance of being included in desired sample in which the selection of one member does not affect the others. This method of randomization according to Adewumi (1986) enables all adults person in the randomly selected wards of the selected districts of Shaki West, Local Government Area to have equal opportunity of being chosen for the study.
Instrumentation
Daramola (1998) defined instrumentation as the process of selecting or developing measuring devices and methods appropriate to a given evaluation or research problem. The main instrument that was used for this study is a self-developed questionnaire tagged “Causes and Consequences of Child Trafficking Questionnaire†(CCCTQ).
However, the questionnaire is divided into three sections. In the first section, respondents gave their biographical data such ++as gender, family type, religion and educational background. Section B consists of items on the causes of child trafficking while section c comprises of items on the consequences of child trafficking. Section B and C items on the questionnaire have four alternative responses in which respondents are required to respond by choosing from the options given. For instance, strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D); Strongly Disagree (SD).
