CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE
Introduction
The excessive or persistent taking of drugs without regard for accepted medical practice by most females’ youth of these days constituted an adverse consequences on their lives, these consequences could be categorized into three areas:
(i) Addiction
(ii) Habituation
(iii) Dependence
Drug Addiction: is a physical dependent of drugs. Attend state of the body, physiology is thus established and when the drug is drawn, distressing symptoms appear. These are associate with the malfunctioning that has been established. The common with drawal symptoms include discomfort, restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, aching, muscles and slight fever.
Habituation: Is a psychological dependence on drug. It occurs when a person has taken a drug regularly because of its pleasing effect and has become so used to having it and that the person does feel comfortable or happy without it.
Dependence: Is a condition in which the user has a compelling desire to continue laking the drug either to experience it effect or to avoid the discomfort, or described drug dependence as encompassing drug habituation and drug addition.
For the purpose of this study, the literature is examined under the following five sub-headings: -
- Meaning, Nature and Concept of Drug Abuse
- Causes of Use of Drugs among Youth with particular reference to the female.
- Consequences of use of drugs among youth with particular references to the females.
- Problems associated with use of drugs among youth.
- Roles of Nigeria Government in curbing use of drugs.
Meaning, Nature and Concept of Drug Abuse
Drug is any substance
used as medicine or in making medicine for internal and external
consumption. Any substance or mixture of substance intended to be used
for cure, mitigation or prevention of diseases of either man or animals.
It could be extracted from plants or produced by chemical alteration or
intentionally from chemical substances.
It can also be defined
as a substance that by its chemical nature affects the structure or
function of a living organism. This definition covers almost everything
that people ingest, inhale, inject or absorb. It includes medicines,
over the counter drugs, illegal drugs, beverage drugs, and cigarettes,
food addictives industrial chemicals even food (Dorothy E. Dusek, 1988).
