    • To summarize the hypothesized action of various drug on central nervous system. It is helpful to categorize some representative by the action they produce. These are as follows:
      a.    Drug affecting arousal. These drugs probably mimic the effects of Norepirephrice (NE) by displacing this amine from peripheral adrenergic nerve ending.
      b.    Drug affecting mood
      c.    Drug affecting perception
According to office of applied studies (2000):
      -    Substance abuse can result in physical and psychological dependence or addiction.
      -    Substance abuse or dependence can affect a person’s over all health and functioning – emotional, psychological and physical.
Therefore, these problems must be addressed a specific issues rather than as mere symptoms of other problems.
      -    The effect of drug on a person depends on more than just the drug. Peoples behaviour under the influence of a drug can vary depending on factors such as age, gender, biology, personal beliefs and expectations and social context.
According to the national household survey on drug abuse (2000) drug abuse can lead to: -
      1.    Pervasive social and health problems
      2.    Cut across all demographic categories
      3.    Potentially life threatening
      4.    Often intergenerational
      5.    Tend to become progressively worse
      6.    Affect all members of the family
      7.    Typically involve denial by all parties
      8.    Result in social isolation for individuals and families
      9.    Often lead to other kinds of problems (e.g. health, legal and financial).

Problems Associated with Use of Drugs among Youths
According to centre for substance abuse Prevention (CSAP, 2000).
      -    Among the estimated 3.7 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 24.2% reported using an illicit drug in the past month in 2000. This compares with a rate of 5.5% among adults not on probation.
      -    Young adult males are more likely than other demographic groups to the involved in alcohol related homicides and assault.
      -    Of all psychoactive substances, alcohol is the one who use has been most clearly shown to increase aggression.
      -    According to the National Victimization Survey (NCVS), in 1999 based on victims perceptions, 1.2 million violent crimes occurred each year in which victims were certain that the offender had been drinking. For about 1 in 4 of these violent victimizations involving alcohol by the offender victims believed the offender was also using drugs of the time of the offense.
      -    According to 1999 study, women assaulted by intimate partners during the past 12 months reported significantly higher substance abuse as well as other health – related problems of those women experiencing physical violence, 33% reported drug and alcohol problems, compared to 16% of those who did not experience violence.
      -    Though there is no “cause” of abuse and no specific profile of abusers, many factors contribute and male abuse more likely to occur pressures on the family, alcohol and drug abuse, and social isolation can all lead to parental stress and increase the chances that a parent will strike out at their children.
      -    Prenatal drug-exposed children were found to have small difference in Q scores and medium sized differences in receptive and expressive language functioning. An analysis by Brown University estimates that the special education needed to keep these children from failing in school cost up to $352 million per year.
      -    Among students who were sexually active, 25% had used alcohol or drugs at the time of their last sexually intercourse. Male students (31.2%) were significantly more likely than females students (18.5%) to have used alcohol or the time of their last sexual intercourse.
      -    The use of alcohol has also been linked to fatal injuries.
