Table 3 summarizes the proportion of students who have tried smoking by Grade 120, over half of our sample had smoking at least one cigarette. Interestingly, although more grade 6 male and females, had tried smoking, by Grade 10 significantly more females than males had tried smoking. This is part of a significant shift in the health risk behaviour of young women over the past 20 years. More and more young women are taking similar chances over the three surveys for the Grade 6 and 8 cohorts, but there was a steady increase over the three surveys in the portion of Grade 10 students who had tried smoking.
Drug Use
According to national Household Survey on Drug Abuse (1998), women interview for this study also reported substantial involvement with a variety of illicit drugs. Almost two-thirds were regular illegal drug users in the six months prior to arrest and 39% were using more than one type of drug. In term of drug types: -
40% used cannabis
37% used heroin
15% illogically used benzodiazepines
6% used cocaine
The drug use monitoring in Australia found the following result: -
- In the United Kingdom, 75% of females arrestees tested positive to at least one drug, 43% tested positive for multiple drug, 45% for updates (including heroin), 30% for cocaine and 33% for cannabis, women were significantly more likely than men to test positive for opiate and cocaine 9Bennett, 2002).
- In the United States, more than half of the women tested positive to at least one illicit substance and in half of the 29 site 65% or more are tested positive (US Department of Justice 2003).
