    • The question on drug use was only asked from young people in Grade 8 and 10. Perhaps that must notable tend presented in table 4 is the sharp increase in drug (marijuana) use between 1994 and 1998.
Causes of Use Drugs among Females’ Youths
According to Confnachic and others, it is that the illegal and legal use/abuse of drug is more symptomatic of personal problems than drug problem. However, he attributed use of drug to the following factors: -
      -    Peer group pressure
      -    Ignorance
      -    Frustration
      -    Problems in the home
      -    Search for identity
      -    Unrealistic goals
According to madden (1984) the socio-cultural aspect which affect the acceptability of the drugs are the most influential features influencing harmful personal consumption. He further stated that myths also attached curative role to some substances such as analysis and some beverage containing alcohol.
On personality feature as a factor, Madden (1984) observed that emotional problem that arises within the constitution and the stem from genetic and childhood influences play a role in the causation of harmful level of psychoactive substances consumption. The difficulty is in determining the emotional anomalies that are either the “FACTORS’ EFFECTS OR CAUSES” of drug abuse.
Osu (1991) on the other hand revealed that the major or factors responsible for use of drug among undergraduate female’s student are: -
      -    Ignorance
      -    Idleness
      -    Curiosity
      -    Spirit of rebellion against the system and the family socio-economic.
He further explained that female’s youth’s are not fully conscious of the dangerous effects of use of drug through this they have become victims of circumstances either through association with another abuses or her peers. Similarly lack of creative venture, his observation may lead females’ youth to experimentation drug for the thrill of it. He further maintain that for some females youths it was a way of expressing their opposition to the system either the family or any constituted authority.
Finally he asserted that the socio-economic background of the females youths may also induce some of them to drug in order to escape from reality of either poverty, broken home or general hardship.
According to National clearing house on family violence (1997), it was stated that young and adult females engaged in use of drugs because:
      -    Women abused the past or currently living with an abusive partner, may use alcohol or other drugs to deal with pains, anxiety and fear of situation.
      -    Adults who were abused as children may use substance to deaden the pain of past memories.
      -    Adolescents who have been abused or who have witnessed abuse may resort to alcohol or other drugs use as a coping mechanism.
      -    Parents who abuse or neglect their children often have problems with substance use.
      -    Women may engage in abuse substances to diminish their feeling of guit or shame or to assist in denial of their acts.
      -    Those who for seniors or persons with disabilities may give them excessive medication or with hold medication in order to co0ntrol their behaviour.
National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS), 2002, a random sample of Australians are interviewed about their drug use at approximately three years intervals. In 2001, almost 27,000 people aged 14 years and over were interviewed about their behaviours concerning tobacco, drug and alcohol, according to the NDSHS, 14% of females and 20% males reported using illicit drugs in the 12 months prior to the survey. This was comparable to rates of drug use in 1995, but lower than in 1998 when 19% of females and 25% of males and reported recent drug use.
The highest rates of drug use were among 20 to 29 years old for both females and males (31%) and 40% respectively.
Females reported a lower prevalence of recent drug use than males for all types of drugs, small percentages of female and males had recently used heroin or were injecting drug users. The most common type of drug, to be injected were amphelamines, heroin and other opiales.
