Poor academic performance among secondary school students is associated
with drug consumption. Drug Abuse contributes to students missing
class, failing tests, dropping out due to poor grades and compromising
the academic mission of colleges and universities.
One of the
most common consequences of drug abuse by student is difficulty in
keeping up with academic responsibilities. The number of drug a student
consumes is directly associated with the student’s grades.
Core institutes research shows the following, correlation between grades and drug consumption
i. Student with ‘B’ averages consume 1.1 more drugs per week than ‘A’ students
ii. Students with ‘C’ average consume 2.7 more drugs per week than ‘A’ students
iii. Student with ‘D’ and ‘F’ averages consume 6.4 more drugs per week than ‘A’ students
Also According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, about a quarter of secondary school students were report experiencing difficulty with academic due to drug abuse, including earning Low grades, doing poorly on tests and papers, missing class and falling behind. Even students who don’t take drug may suffer academically as a result of their peers taken drugs. The so – called secondary effects of taking drugs including the viction of an assault and putting up with loud parties, it can affect the school work of students who don’t take drug. These consequences can have dramatic end results. Campus administrators report that a significant number of students who drop out of college do so because drug interfered with their academics. Drug abuse has an adverse effect on the educational academic performance of the students. It has already noted that the outh due to the exuberance are susceptible to the menace of drug abuse. (E. Kiely et al, 2006)
Students who indulge in drug abuse in secondary school constitute a nuisance to the entire school community. The perpetrator cause violence leading to demonstrations and harassment of other students. They perform badly in the class compare with other students. They can’t concentrate, showing lack of interests and also having impaired memory.(Dr. Morgan 2001)
These set of students sort to all forms of ills behaviors in the school so as to conceal their academic in adequacy. They form gangs and other cover associations. The present education impasses caused by campus cults and confraternities in our college today are the handwork of hemp smokers and addicts in the college, they destroyed a lot of facilities within the campus. In some cases after a space of violence, schools are normally closed down and the students are laid off for a long period. This lay off in most cases could cause serious setback for some individuals because time lasted could amount to a lot of losses. (Dr. Morgan 2001)
He continue that students who are addicts usually end up badly in secondary school, they spend many years in school; at the end some do not even graduate, they are either rusticated or failed to acquire the necessary requirement for graduation. (Oladele 2014)
According to Morgan, they remain in schools and continue to corrupt new students and destroy themselves and their friends as well. When they are eventually thrown out of the school, they metamorphose into hardened and highly sophisticated criminal within the large society.
The Effect of Drug Abuse
The effect of drug abuse can be seen from perspectives, the addict and social environment. To the addiction as an individual, it exposes him/her to all forms of health organization. Depending on the types of drug used, Drug abused individual could suffer from brain damage, psychosis, chronic cough, heart and others. The social environment, drug abuse brings about a wide ranges problem. An institution, which suffer from drug abuse by the students will record increase in crimes, cultism, examination malpractices, violence and death. It’s known fact that drug abuse is not only a problem of drug abused individual only. (Awake A. 2003),
Therefore, this study will make more emphasis on the drug abused individual and moral upbringing of students.
Effect on Moral Upbringing of Students: The students in many societies are the leaders of future, they constitute the foundation on which the destiny of the society in future lies. The issue of drug addiction has a negative impact on the upbringing and conduct of the students. Where the students are exposed to drug addictions, they too become morally deficient. Moral upbringing of the students, being at home throughout the period that the individual engaged in the learning process in schools and other institutions up to the stage of adulthood. At home, the child tries to emulate the morals of his parents and other members in the family. If the child is unlucky to grow up in a family where drug abuse exists, such a child will grow up to be an addict. (Babbie E. 2011),
