    •    Furthermore, most homes where the parents or other family members abuse drugs, they are prone to problems which include child abuse, child neglect, constant squabble and emotional destruction among others.
A child who grows up in such atmosphere of chaos is most likely to emulate the above vicar. Consequently, the child developed the habit of stealing, pick pocketing, shop lifting and even borrowing money to be able to acquire drug.
The situation increases when the child is introduced to a larger society such as schools or colleges, where the atmosphere is more loose than what exists at home. Hence the child who had earlier picked up the bad habit of drugs abuse at home immediately show himself as being more socially advanced than his colleagues.
A gang is then formed and social problem developed within the college. (Awake A. 2003) The recent cases of campus cults and confraternities in our higher institutions of learning can be used to buttress the above points. Our schools have now become the battle ground to the children, on graduate, they have now become a menace to the society. They have matures as an undesirable element and hardened criminal. With their record, such individual becomes a ready target for recruitment by trans – national criminal organizations, hired assassin, drug pusher. E.g Boko Haram and Badoo gang.
Lastly, the family is largely responsible for the moral upbringing of their children. If the family introduced drug to the child during the formative years, the child will grow up with the habit as we have discussed earlier. Once the habit is formed the child becomes morally bankrupt, his/her bad behavior continues until the individual is finally destroyed. There is no doubt that drug abuse has tremendous negative impacts on the moral upbringing of the students. (Kudrasi GM and Mary Plummer 2009)
Effect on the Life of Drug Abused Individual: Drug Abused Individual is one who makes an irresponsible use of drugs and without professional guidance in order to achieve individual satisfaction and receive well – being. The effect of drugs addict ranges from emporia, loss of appetite, nervousness, impaired memory, loss of weight, poor concentration, lack of interest. (Hogan M. 2002)
Some portion of the study will attempt to expose the negative influence of drugs in the social life of the Drug Abused Individual. Man is a social being and in whatever society he finds himself he strives to exist within the ambit of the actual and perceived social values prevalent in such a society. With this in mind and given the stated effects of drug on Drug Abused Individual, it is imminent to understand the influences Dug abuse brings to the societal life of Drug Abused Individual.
They are normally left out, scorned and abused by the generality of the society especially when the negative effect of the Drug abuse arises to bear their lives. Furthermore Drug Abused Individual tend to flock together. They find it increasingly difficult to meet up with the requirement of what it takes to be in the social environment. Equally Drug Abused Individual are seen to be synonymous with criminal. All forms of criminal behaviours and the perpetrators of those criminals are drug addicts. (Univazo C. 2009),
      Counseling of Drug Abuse
Drug abuse counseling requires a comprehensive approach that not only rehabilitates them, but also addresses the underlying causes of chemical dependency. People delve into drug abuse for different reasons; some to cope with life’s failure and disappointments, others to be accepted by peers and some to forget conflicts. From wayward adolescent runaways to depressed housewives, society is fast becoming a culture of people seeking to escape reality. Behavioural therapists and counsellors strive to uncover the root cause of substance abuse by conducting one – on – one consultation with people who opt to enroll in rehabilitation programmes. Some have reached the end of their rope, and come to the realization that professional intervention whether faith – based or secular is the only way out of the vicious cycle of chemical dependency. (Delinda Mercer, Ph.D. 2004)
The source of abuse can begin with a desire deferred, a hope denied, or a lifetime riddled with physical or sexual abuse, a dysfunctional family environment, absentee father, or abusive mother. Whatever the cause or catalyst for substance abuse, drug abuse counseling must follow a direct and holistic approach to produce a cure and an individual capable of reentering society. Therapy usually starts with an assessment of each program participant by an impartial clinician. Counselors listen intently to participant’s verbal and Non – verbal responses to a specific set of questions. Drug abuse counseling explores past medical histories, criminal backgrounds, employment records, and past behavioural treatment rendered to clients. Medical histories will reveal conditions which may have contributed to substance abuse. Many a time, individuals looked for pain killers, tranquilizers, or over the counter drugs. Some establish a pattern of dependency on prescription medicines, often finding emotional relief and stimuli from a pill bottle rather than facing people, places and things which are disconnecting. Patient records may reveal multiple prescriptions for the same drug obtained from several different physicians. In the case of prescription, drug abuse counsellors will recommend weaning programs and address emotional issues. (Delinda Mercer, Ph.D. 2004)
