Sales of material during school: This bad behaviour is now common among the secondary school teachers. According to Sunday Punch Editorial of October 2003, both male and female teachers abandoned their rightful duties to engage in sales of clothes, shoes, cosmetics or provision in and outside the school. It added that most of them are found at Cotonou, Lagos, Kano and other trading center where they are supposed to be in the school teaching innocent children.
The Punch described this as a pathetic school situation which most be brought to an end because of its negative consequence in poor academic attainment, laziness, truancy and drop out. The older ones may engage in such as sexual activities, drug and smoking because of negligence of duties by the teachers.
Effect of Teachers Behavioral problems on Students in School
School success is synonymous to students’ achievement. Ijaya (1997) noted that although it is impossible to ascribe student learning to one single factor especially teachers. They must however, be recognized as the most important resources in the teaching – learning process. Furthermore, the tone of the school depend on the teachers attitudes and is oration in the school. This means that effective learning is very much dependent on the behaviour of the teachers.
Members of any organization are considered disciplined when their behaviours confirm with the laid down rules or norms and policies of the school such that its operation proceed smoothly on the daily basis. When the principal loses control of his teacher from whatever reason, the school is in trouble. This means that the school management becomes problematic. The quality and quantity of teaching and learning also decline and so does a student discipline (Ijaya, 1997).
In Nigeria, signals of problems in school management are increasingly rearing its ugly head because it teachers attitude and behaviour. These include massive failure in secondary school certificate examination (SSCE) and junior secondary school (JSS) examination particularly in English and Mathematics others effect include massive examination malpractices, truancy, dropout, sexual promiscuity, pregnancies and drug and alcohol consumption.
Moru (1989) suggested that all these behaviours constitute a blockage in the progress more to educational advancement. He then concluded that all hand must be on deck to adjust towards desire behaviour for the growth and development of school going students and professional competence of the teachers.
