Summary of Finding
The focus of this study is to investigate the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school student in Ilorin South L.G.A Kwara State. Five null hypotheses were generated for the study while several questions were raised. The hypotheses generated in this study were tested using the t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical measures.
The results of the means scores and rank order of the responses to the items provided answers to the research questions. Thus, secondary school students considered lo educational level of parents as being the major factor that influence their academic performance. This is closely followed uncondusive accommodation at home insufficient parents.
Furthermore, the result of the tested hypotheses revealed that four out of the five null hypotheses were accepted while one was rejected. By implication, the results revealed that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students on the basis of religion, parental highest educational qualification, family size and parent employment type on the other hand, significant difference existed in the perception of the respondents on the basis of gender.
