Implication of the findings
The findings revealed that the respondents are conscious of the influence of family background on academic performances of students. They acknowledged family size as having influence on students’ academic performance. Nevertheless other factors, such as parent, personal, peer group and school equally play significant roles in the students’ academic performances. This study creates awareness on the important factors to consider while determining the academic performance of secondary school students. It is worthy to examine public view about influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students. The finding therefore has helped to establish the link between family background and students’ academic performance. Thus, counsellor has to understand that students’ academic performance may be predetermined by extrinsic motivation. Hence, it may be necessary to create awareness about influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study the following recommendations were made, that
i. Parents should monitor their children’s academic performance on daily basis parents should make sure that they provide shelter, clothing, medical service and food to their children,
ii. Parents should ensure that they establish a cordial relationship with their children so that the children could concentrate well in classes.
iii. The school should see it as a point of duty t conduct Parents Teachers’ Association (PTA) meetings regularly. This will provide forum to discuss about students problems and both at home and school and proper solution could be jointly profer.
iv. The federal, the state and the local government should see the urgent need for training and providing more guidance counsellors to meet the psychological, emotional and social needs of the students.
v. In addition, the teacher should encourage educational activities and social interaction among the students. This can be achieved through group work for students and their various assignments.
Suggestions for further studies
This study only considered the perception of secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government education area, Kwara State on influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students, therefore, subsequent studies may consider other related areas. The following suggestions are made for further studies.
i. Studies may be conducted on the influence of parents’ socio-economic background on students’ academic performance.
ii. Effect of home on academic performances of students in Ilorin metropolis.
iii. Influence of broken homes on the academic performance of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis.
