CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the study
Education remains one of the tools for the transformation of an individual and society at large. It is one of the most powerful instruments for social change, which plays a crucial role in national building. According to and Esere(2007),education helps to develop people’s intellectual and functional capabilities. Education is a process in which and by which the knowledge, characters and behaviour of the human being are shaped and moulded. According to Awoko(2016)Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills values, beliefs and habits. Education methods include story telling, discussion, teaching, training and directed research. Imam (2000)said that education is a process which enables an individual to distinguish between the true and false, the good and bad, the conduct and the evil doing.
One of the cardinal objectives of Education as spelt out in the National policy on Education (2004)revised,is to inculcate right type of values and attitudes for the survival of the individual and Nigeria society. The process of education is not only self –realization of the individual but it is also to bring into action the potential in man.
Behaviour can be defined as the way in which an individual acts. It is the way an individual conducts him/herself. Behaviour, therefore, is the way an individual acts towards people, society or objects. It can be either bad or good. It can be normal or abnormal according to society norms. Society will always try to correct bad behaviour and try to bring abnormal behaviour back to normal. Unachukwu and Nwankwu (2001) stressed that students at secondary schools are all adolescent and as such as faced with the problem of social identity such as increase in intellectual awareness ability; emotional capability and expanded social interests which they believe affect their behavioural patterns at schools. They were of the opinion that all human being have fairly common socio-psychological and innate biological needs which bring conflict in an attempt to satisfy to satisfy them by the adolescent students and this throws them off balance which resulted un Unruly behaviour. Unruly behaviour is negative form of self control, Zubaida (2009) citing (Dare, Hashim, & Sweinan, 2004). Defined discipline in schools as respect for school laws and regulations and the maintenance of an established Standard of behaviour and implies self-control, restraint, respect for oneself and others. A behaviour that contradicts the above becomes unruly behaviour. According to Tunworth (2000), if students cultivate the habit of self-control in schools, there will be a smooth running in the school system but reverse will be the case if students are not discipline. The respect which teachers command among students had been seriously worm-off. And some teachers have not done much to help the situation by their actions, this problem has turned to a national issue. Our leaders in the past have tried to remedy this situation but the problem proved not to be solved.
Zubaida (2009) identifies various forms of unruly behaviour among the secondary school students such as truancy, lateness to school, cultism, drug abuse, insulting /assaulting, stealing, rioting and many other anti-social vices.
Secondary schools are established with the aim of producing students who are worthy in character and learning. Students are expected to acquire knowledge skills, experience and discipline that will help them sharpen their destiny and rebuild them from what they used to be what they intend to become. Students at this level of education predominantly fall between the ages of eleven to eighteen.
Behaviour is considered abnormal or anti-social if it is uncommon, different from the norm and does not conform to what society expects. This idea is also closely related to the statistical approach to definite abnormally which rest on the idea that differences in human behaviour tends to fall in to a normal distribution curve (Nwankwo , 2010).A particular behaviour is not acceptable or is anti-social if any of these three criteria are seen; the behaviour does not allow a person to function effectively with others as member of society. If the behaviour does not permit the person to meet his /her own needs and the behaviour has a negative effect in the being of others. However, young people are segregation from adult society and such segregation serves as an important contribution to anti-social behaviour by teenagers. Period of adolescence is the most crucial period in the life of human beings and is the stage where life reaches its peak (Nwankwo, 2001). The adolescent is eager to learn new experiences, to find new relationships, to examine resources of inner strength and fathom the strength of inner ability. However, anti-social behaviour is one of the most significant types of personality disorder (Nwankwo, 2010). People with the social problems make life miserable for those around them. They typically display no regard for the moral of ethical rules of the society or the rights of others, manipulating people and situation for their own benefits. Unruly behaviour has been an important topical issue that has been researched by various researchers in an attempt to discover the outcome of it in various contexts especially education context such as secondary and tertiary institutions and how it affects the academic achievements of Students. According to Advanced learners Dictionary, unruly behaviour means a way of behaving, manners, treatment shown towards others. Unruly behaviour is socially defined as problem, a sources of concern, or as undesirable by the norms of conventional society and the institutions of adult authority, and its occurrence usually elicits some kinds of social control response.
