    • Adolescent Pregnancy
As premarital sexual activity has become more common in Nigeria and the United States of America, the rate of adolescent pregnancy has increased sharply and has become a matter of urgent social concern. Approximately, 700,000 adolescent pregnancies were recorded in a year this resulted into 300,000 abortions, 200,000 out of marriage births, 100,000 marriages and 100,000 miscarriage each year (Bigrene, 1977) 10% of all female adolescents and 23% of those who reported being non-virgins report having been pregnant at least once (Sorenson, 1973).
These statistics represents a great amount of personal disruption and adversity. A pregnant adolescent is more likely to have complications than a woman in her 20’s. Biological immaturity and poor access to uses of prenatal health care contribute to such difficulties. Most unmarried adolescent mothers (87%) now keep their babies. 8% place their children for formal adoption and 5% place the child themselves usually with relatives (Alorn Guttmacher Institute, 1976).
Pregnancy and the decision to keep one’s child appear to have a significant impact on the adolescent’s educational and financial resources. Eight out of ten adolescents give birth at between the ages of 15 and 17 years and drop out of high school. Ninety percent (90%) of mothers who gave birth at those ages are unemployed. 72% are receiving welfare services Delatiner (1978).
